Why the squares at all?
I agree, I'm not sure exactly what purpose the squares serve. Are we trying to express something through them? If not, I'd probably ditch them and loosen up the spacing between the two words slightly. They feel a little too tight currently.
I also agree with the whole square thing. I think it would be better if we made it more simple and focused on the exhibit itself.

I think it looks good with the darkened squares. It looks tied together now to me. Did you like it better this way too?
